The Amazing Zucchini-Cucumber

Our garden is, so far, growing okay this year. We have gotten some tomatoes and sweet banana peppers, and our zucchini plants are growing like crazy. The leaves on those plants are huge. We had no idea. A zucchini finally matured enough that we were able to pick it today. Owen is adamant that it is a cucumber. Adamant. Per Owen, cucumbers are green and zucchini is brown. (Also, per Owen, boys listen to music with guitars and girls listen to music with pianos. But that's another story.)

Posing next to the zucchini plant. The leaves are almost as big as Owen.

Owen has been very anxious to finally pick a zucchini-cucumber.

Our first zucchini-cucumber! Owen wants to cut it up and put it in his lunch. I'm voting we grill it. Either way, it will definitely be enjoyed.

Ed Camera Phone Upload - Part 1

Luckily for Owen, in Arizona you can get away with being half-naked in the front yard. (Though he would much prefer to be completely naked.) Such a skinny child.

Owen still talks about the Blake Island boat trip. Wonderful memories were created that trip.

I'm not sure Owen has the patience to be a golfer, but I am sure he could smack the ball pretty hard.

Looking suave while reading, thanks to Uncle CJ and Aunt Alexis.

We turn our backs at him in the paint store for five minutes, and he creates a classic Owen stack. Also, I used to sit like that all the time when I was a kid. Many adults would comment how it must be uncomfortable and note that wasn't a normal way to sit. It's funny to see Owen sit that way. Clearly, the kid is taking after his mother in terms of joints/muscles.

Ed would always ask me to test drive cars with him, just for fun. I did not find it that fun. Owen, however, loves it. One of the perks of having a son.

Just Like a Fish

Owen started swim lessons a few weeks ago, and he really enjoys it. Swimming seems to be very natural for him. Makes sense given he is an Arizona baby, and has spent all his summers in a pool. Since starting swim lessons, he has wanted to swim in our pool pretty much every day. He's doing a great job. He can actually swim out to Ed in the middle of the pool, kicking, with his head under water.  We feel a lot better having him around the pool knowing he knows basic swimming skills.

Doing warm-up exercises with Teacher Alexis.
Giving the classic toddler "smile".

Mother's Day 2012

Ahhh... Mother's Day. The day mothers of young children get to sleep-in, guilt free. Ed tried his hardest to keep Owen away from our bedroom this morning (successfully for 2 hours - Ed), but Owen is a little sneak and managed to slip in and wake me up. It's hard to be upset when the reason I am even celebrating today, wants me to wake up to play with him.

Owen's school had a nice, little Mother's Day celebration this past week. It was held over lunch time and surprisingly, in a good way, all the mother's showed up.

Each mom had a place setting that included a wrapped gift, a flower pot painted by the kids, and a poem.

Owen's classroom - even though we only see these kids in the morning and afternoon, we've grown pretty attached to them. They are a great group of kids.

The kids put on a short recital and sang a few songs about mothers. It was adorable and you could tell they were very proud of their singing. Owen had been talking about the recital all week and told me when I heard the song that, "I would need a tissue cause I was going to cry." He was right.

Owen's plate he made for me. All the other plates were pretty scribbled on. Owen is clearly more of a minimalist when it comes to his art.

And finally, Happy Mother's Day to our wonderful mothers! We love you very much.

File This Under: What Were You Thinking?!

"I smeared Vaseline all over my Aunt Connie's bathroom at about this age and although I don't remember what I was thinking, I'm sure it wasn't malicious."  That's what's going through my mind here... as I'm cleaning up after Owen's decision to spray an entire bottle of sunscreen in our living room.  On our coffee table, the coffee table books, the couch (leather - 1, sunscreen - 0), the rug, the remotes, and the floor. In case you've ever wondered (and we'll forgive you if you haven't; we hadn't) sunscreen on inanimate objects is thick and waxy. Let's hope fate is smiling on us and this phase comes and goes quickly.

Good thing that was waterproof sunscreen. Good thing.

Monday Funny

Ed downloaded his photos from his phone the other day and this little gem was on it. Cracks me up every time I look at it.

4th Birthday Party (and 500th post)

It seems appropriate that our 500th post is corresponding with Owen's birthday party post. 500 posts! Not too shabby, even with the posting slow down that has occurred this year.

Owen had a very nice 4th birthday. My mom and dad were in town, and four of Owen's buddies from his new preschool plus two of his good buddies from his old daycare, came over to celebrate his big day. Owen was in a great mood all day long. It was really incredible, with all the excitement, he never crashed. I think it just shows how happy he was.

The birthday spread. Notice the racecar apple/grape snacks. Thank you, Pintrest!

Ed made a racecar track out of lumber left over from the shadow box. It was a definite hit.

The party favor was a racecar helmet that the kids could decorate with stickers.

We drew a track outside for the kids to race around. Unfortunately, it was a tad too hot outside so this was a fun, but short-lived activity.

Singing to the birthday boy. He covered his ears the entire time, but also had a big smile of his face while doing it.

It warmed all parent's hearts when the ripping open of presents was stalled to read a book.

All the kids loved "helping" Owen open his presents. Owen was a trooper and didn't mind the help one bit.
