Over the past few weeks Owen has gotten better and better with walking so today we decided to take him for a little hike. We went up to a preserve trail that's known for being a pretty easy hike and let him loose. For a kid learning to walk who was flanked by cacti, he did pretty well, leaving the trail with the exact number of holes in him as when we started. Now that's good parenting.

Owen's First Haircut
Owen had his first haircut on Saturday. He was starting to develop a mullet and his bangs were hanging in his eyes. I attempted to cut it myself but I just made Owen mad and his mullet look worse. We took him to Ed's hair dresser. She was excited to cut his hair; it was really sweet. Ed has been going to her since before I was pregnant so she has watched Owen grow up. Overall, Owen did well but he seemed pretty relieved when it was over.
Sometimes he was nice and calm, fascinated by what was happening.
But most of the time he was squiggly and unhappy. We were pretty impressed that the hair dresser was able to do such a good job with a moving target. When we were finished, they placed a lock of his hair in a card that read "baby's first haircut."
Here is Owen post-haircut. Looking less like a baby and more like a little boy. And a handsome little boy at that.
(Note: The action figure in Owen's hand is a police officer that came with a cop car he got for Christmas. His name is Jason. He's named after our favorite Washington cop.)

Monster Shoes
Ron and Debby sent Owen a pair of fun slippers as part of the get well package. He hasn't worn them because for whatever reason, they have scared him. Tonight we told him they were monster shoes. He immediately became interested in them and wanted to wear them.
To explain, Owen is into monsters right now. One of his new favorite books is The Monster at the End of This Book. It's probably one of his favorites because Ed talks like a monster the entire time he reads the book. So now Owen likes to talk like a monster and is pretty fascinated by anything monster like.
Mooonnnssteerr shoes! Watch out - Owen's gonna get ya.
(Ignore the half painted walls and ripped up trim. We've been in the middle of painting the hall...well... for the past three months. Anyways - it's work in progress.)

You're Gonna What Now?
We met with a specialist today who is going to be making a soft cast for Owen's ankles. We thought he might need knee braces, but the doctor said he thought these might be a good starting point so we were happy.
Owen, on the other hand had some concerns.
He actually did really well given the situation. We were very proud of him and I think the doctor took a shining to him.
The process was actually pretty cool. He wrapped Owen's ankles with stuff that looked like ace bandages and it hardened immediately and he cut them right back off. They make molds out of those preforms and make a lightweight, flexible cast out of them. The casts will strap on and have a rubber bottom (better than hard plastic on tile) so he can either wear them under shoes or by themselves. We'll see, but we're hoping this helps him out enough to where he doesn't need any braces or surgery down the road. I know it's kind of wishful thinking, but this is where we're at and we think it's a good first, and hopefully only, step.

Feelin' Better
Owen seems to have kicked his bug and is feeling much better these days. He's eating a ton and everybody suspects he's in the middle of another growth spurt. It also helps that the sun is out again. We had a couple of days of rain and the gloom was felt by all. But now that outside is an option again, everyone's spirits are riding high.
As a sign of a gentle soul, Owen gets so excited when he sees the hummingbirds drinking. Today on the way home he told me that today he ate a bird. I took that to mean he would enjoy watching the birds eat today. He did.

Down and Out
This week has been rough. Owen and I were both sick. In fact every kid at the daycare was sick this week, along with Dawn and her daughter. Two bouts of pneumonia and some ear infections. We took Owen to the doctor on Thursday and it turns out he has bronchiolitis caused by RSV along with the beginning of an ear infection. Owen is on antibiotics and doing breathing treatments using a nebulizer to help him breathe easier. Having two out of three people in the house down makes for a rough week. Long, restless nights from coughing, tons of tissues for running noses, fighting with Owen to get medicine in him.
Today was the first day since last Friday there is a glimmer of hope that things are getting better for both me and Owen. Let's hope that Ed somehow, miraculously, does not get this cold. Simply put, it sucked.
When you're sick, all you want is a paci and blankie....every blankie you own.

Weekly Recap
Look at that. The first week of 2010 has gone by and we never posted. Shame on us. Time to do a quick recap.
We have a new front door! Ain't she perty and oh so red? We have always wanted a bright red door. Plus we like to think it makes our house look a little less pink. The old door was fairly ugly and incredibly beat up. I'm pretty sure if you kicked it hard enough, the whole door would fall down. And I'm pretty sure that happened to it in the past. But now we are safe and secure and loving the door.
Owen had a rough start to the week. A pink dollhouse fell on his head at daycare which resulted in a nice size bump.
On Tuesday Owen had a follow-up visit to the orthopedic doctor. We were hoping for a routine visit but unfortunately it was not. It looks like Owen's knee problems are not improving and he will need to wear knee braces. He had x-rays taken and has an appointment with another doctor for a second opinion (at the request of his doctor) and then a follow-up with his orthopedic doctor. We will know more at the end of this month. For now we are taking things one step at a time and Owen is getting creative with devices to help him walk such as using his baseball tee. He looks like a little old man with a cane. Do they make baby size canes?
And now we've ended the week with little O sick. Miles was sick this week so we were wondering if Owen would catch it and he did. Poor guy woke up 4:00 AM Saturday morning with a fever and cough. He's handling it like a champ though. His day has consisted of lounging around, watching Sesame Street and reading books. (FYI - today's letter was the letter 'M'.)
Looking back it seems like a rough week but it wasn't. We're in a pretty good groove and these little bumps in the road didn't disrupt that. For all he went through this week, Owen has remained chatty and giggly. But... let's hope next week is a little more boring.

Spontanious Theme Music
I swear we were just walking around the kitchen department at Home Depot and all of a sudden Owen starts making a sound. This wasn't an ordinary sound, mind you, this was theme music. As we all know, when someone around you starts emitting theme music, something crazy is about to go down. And if that theme music happens to be Eye of the Tiger, you better just pray to God you have a camera on you. We did!
